York, ME – August 16, 2010 – On Monday, August 16, 2010 Christopher L. Wheeler, PA-C was invited to speak about the Sports Concussion Program and utilization of the ImPACT Test to the coaches, parents and athletes of York High School. The Fall Sports information session at York High School is an opportunity to educate parents and athletes about the athletic program and some of the safety measures that are in place to help protect the athletes.
For the past two years, York High School has strongly encouraged that all high school athletes take the ImPACT Baseline test to help better prepare them in the case that they suffer a head injury during practice or competitive play. Chris Wheeler explained how the physicians of Access Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics can use the ImPACT test to measure the effects of a concussion following a head-injury. In many cases, the more obvious symptoms including headaches or memory loss will have subsided, but the neurocognitive test can measure if there are still other deficits following a concussion. This information helps to ensure an athlete’s safe return to play.
Exeter, NH – August 3, 2010 – It’s mid-summer in New Hampshire and soon enough high schools across the state will be kicking off fall sport tryouts, workouts, and practices. Although the lazy days of summer have just ended, students soon must ramp up quickly to ready themselves for competitive matchups and rivalries in all fall athletics. These include those that produce some of the higher injury rates in scholastic sports, namely football, field hockey, soccer and cross country. This dangerous combination of de-conditioning coupled with the short preseason of fall athletics is a recipe for many injuries.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), high school athletes account for an estimated two million injuries, 500,000 doctor visits and 30,000 hospitalizations each year. Not only are youth athletes injuring themselves playing sports more often, but the types of injuries and the magnitude of injuries that we are seeing have changed. More youth athletes are suffering from injuries that previously would have only been seen in professional level athletes. Overuse and serious acute injuries are becoming more common. As the intensity and demands of youth sports continue to rise, young athletes are more vulnerable than ever to these types of injuries.
In response to the growing epidemic of sports injuries in youth athletes, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) in partnership with several other national organizations has introduced the STOP Sports Injuries Campaign. The STOP (Sports Trauma and Overuse Prevention) Sports Injuries Campaign was created by a network of organizations and corporations under the leadership of Dr. James Andrews to help prevent athletic overuse and trauma injuries in children. The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness of athletic injuries in athletes, parents and coaches, and educate all involved in methods of injury prevention and reduction. An added benefit is that by avoiding injuries, many athletes can sustain longer athletic careers while enjoying all the benefits of organized sports.
There are some easy steps that youth athletes and their parents can take to help STOP sports injuries. Pre-participation exam physicals (which are required at most schools) are an important first step and evaluating a child’s health eligibility to play competitive sports. Most common overuse injuries result from the sudden increase of activity in intensity and/or duration. Cross-training and fitness training during the off-season help the body become acclimated to vigorous athletic activity which can effectually minimize the stress on the body at the start of a season. Also, ImPACT Baseline Concussion Testing should also be a part of every athlete’s preseason schedule. Youth athletes are especially vulnerable to serious head injuries, and neurocognitive testing can help ensure a player’s safe return to sports following a concussion.
Once an athlete is engaged in competitive play, careful stretching and cool-down should be a regular part of the game-day routine. With every sport, correct form and technique should be taught, encouraged and reiterated to youth athletes. Proper hitting form and techniques, core strength and body positioning will help reduce the likelihood of an overuse or traumatic injury. Coaches and parents should make sure that their athletes are properly fitted with uniforms, pads and helmets. Athletes should speak regularly with a certified athletic trainer or sports medicine physician if they or their parents have any concerns about injuries or injury prevention before beginning any fitness program.
Sports injuries are a problem with youth sports in this country. But by spreading the word and helping to educate our communities, we can all help to STOP Sports Injuries.

The race kicked off the 33rd Annual Market Square Day street festival in downtown Portsmouth. Young
Athletes Overuse Their Bodies and Strike Out Too Early
Help Young Athletes Play Safe and Stay Healthy
Exeter,
NH -- Today, Access Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics is
coming together with the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports
Medicine, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Academy
of Pediatrics, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, National
Athletic Trainers' Association, National Strength and Conditioning
Association and Safe Kids USA to launch the STOP Sports Injuries
campaign.
Sports
injuries among young athletes are on the rise. According
to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), high
school athletes account for an estimated two million injuries,
500,000 doctor visits and 30,000 hospitalizations every year alone.
"We
are seeing a lot of injuries in youth athletes that used
to be limited to professional level athletes," says Dr. Joshua
Siegel, Director of the Sports Medicine program at Access Sports
Medicine and Orthopaedics. "If we use more preventative
measures like pre-participation physicals, stretching and cross-training, we
hope to avoid these more serious and persistant injuries."
The
high rate of youth sports injuries is fueled by an increase in
overuse and trauma injuries and a lack of attention paid to proper
injury prevention. According to the CDC, more than half of all
sports injuries in children are preventable.
"Regardless
of whether the athlete is a professional, an amateur, an Olympian
or a young recreational athlete, the number of sports injuries
is increasing - but the escalation of injuries in kids is the
most alarming," said Dr. James Andrews, president of the
American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and STOP
Sports Injuries Co-Campaign Chair. "Armed with the
correct information and tools, today's young athletes can remain
healthy, play safe, and stay in the game for life."

Most
Rewarding aspect of your work?
"I
feel very fortunate to be in a position where I can help people
who are in pain or have been injured and cannot function at work
or play."
What
makes a great doctor?
"I
believe a great doctor is both highly competent and inherently
driven to learn and progress within his/her field. In particular,
orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine knowledge is expanding
at such speed that what we believe we know one year may be irrelevent
or even wrong the next. The "great" doctor will be the
doctor who has an insatiable appetite for learning. I also believe
that there is no technical skill that is more important than listening.
Finally, I believe that there are no attributes more important
than empathy and compassion."
Any
misconceptions about your specialty?
"Misconceptions
about orthopaedics are that we only treat broken bones or surgical
problems such as torn ligaments and tendons. However, orthopaedic
surgeons are trained to treat primary musculoskeletal problems
such as tendonitis, simple sprains and strains, osteoporosis and
even concussions within the sports fields."
Exciting development in your field?
"The
introduction of biologics into orthopaedics. One example is platelet-rich
plasma to exploit the benefits of growth factors and the healing
potential of the patient's own blood to stimulate healing of tendons
and ligaments. Other examples are the biologic augmentation of
rotator cuff repairs and growing patient's own cartilage cells
to replace focal areas of arthritis. The goal of these advancements
is to someday make joint replacements of historical significance
only."

Josh Siegel, please call 603-775-7575.
