Concussion AwarenessPortsmouth, NH – The Portsmouth Youth Football Association (PYFA) in cooperation with Access Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics and the Riddell Company will hold a Concussion Prevention and Awareness Workshop for Youth Sports on Tuesday, June 19th at the Portsmouth High School Little Theatre from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. The program is open to the public and is being offered without charge.

Kevin D. Heaton, DO, from Access Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics will present on the prevention and treatment of concussions in youth sports. He will educate parents, coaches, and athletes on concussion awareness and identification, proper management, and the serious potential impact of a concussion on the brain of a young athlete. Dr. Heaton will discuss pre-season ImPACT Baseline Testing, return-to-play protocols, and the importance of both athletic and academic restrictions following a head injury. Dr. Heaton has experience in treating Division I Collegiate and High School athletes and oversees the concussion management and athletic training programs at Access Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics.

The Portsmouth Youth Football Association will discuss the decision to buy the newest and best youth football helmet system available to youth players and steps the Association will be taking in the 2012 season to maintain a consistently high level of player safety. In addition, a representative of the Riddell company will be present to discuss the safety features of the Revolution Speed Youth Helmet scheduled for delivery to the PYFA program in June of 2012 and what research the Riddell company is undertaking to ensure high quality equipment is available to youth sports programs.
